Was introduced to Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio,or simply Caravaggio, during my tutorial a few weeks ago.
Many artists have painted their self-portraits in their larger works. These self-portraits sometimes reflect their mental states. Some people who have mental diseases create masterpieces.
Caravaggio is one example.
He draw many self-portraits and used his own face as a model for characters in his paintings. In one of his most famous paintings, called "Sick Baccas" (above), he drew his face as a baccas. People said this painting reflected his depression and bad temper.
However, he wasnt known for his mental state, but for his
1)dramatic use of light in most of his painting,
the revolutionary technique or chiaroscuro of tenebrism 2)well balanced but non symmetrical subjects
3)the extraordinary virtuosity with which all the details
are rendered , that almost looks a little photographic.
4)ability to achieve 3 Dimensionality (the function of formalism)
His method of painting was so widely imitated ,
that the term 'CARAVAGGIST' was coined to apply
to painters who imitated the style of Caravaggio.
However, a new discovery was made about his technique of painting...
